ergänzend zur Kursvorlesung gibt es einen Lektürekurs, in dem ausgewählte, wichtige Primärtexte aus jener Periode gelesen u. diskutiert werden - die Teilnahme auch daran wird allen Hörer/innen der Kursvorlesung sehr empfohlen.
Inhalt Das 19. Jahrhundert ist durch eine massive Expansion der Naturwissenschaften, die Herausbildung neuer sozialer Strukturen (Disziplinen und Berufsbilder) und eine zunehmende Verzahnung von Naturwissenschaft und Technik gekennzeichnet – Chemie und Elektromagnetismus sind nur zwei besonders herausragende Fälle. Naturwissenschaftliche Forschung und technische Errungenschaften veränderten die Lebensverhältnisse weiter Bevölkerungskreise tiefgreifend und verschoben zugleich kulturelle Wertungen und Geltungsansprüche (u. a. Darwinismus, Aufstieg der technischen Hochschulen...). In dem imposanten Gebäude der Wissenschaften wurden gegen Ende des 19. Jhs. erste Brüche erkennbar und ein „Wahrheitsgewissheitsverlust“ (Gregor Schiemann) setzte ein, der abschließend auch noch thematisiert werden soll.
