Formal Models in NLP

We will study formal models such as finite state string and tree automata, (synchronous) grammar formalisms, and their application in areas of natural language processing such as speech processing, phonology, morphology, language modeling, syntactic parsing and machine translation.

Requirements for a Leistungsschein (credit)

CL (Diplom):
Regular attendance, presentation of at least one paper, active participation in class [for 6 LP: also a written report (10–20 pages)]
CL (MSc):
Regular attendance, presentation of at least one paper, active participation in class [for 6 LP: also a written report (10–20 pages)]
MSV (BSc):
Regular attendance, presentation of at least one paper, active participation in class
General requirement:
In order to prepare their talks, students will receive guidance by one of the lecturers. Two weeks before the presentation, a meeting with the lecturer is mandatory. Slides should be made available to the rest of the class a week before the presentation.
Kursprogramm
After a few introductory meetings in which the lecturers review basic notions, students will present and discuss research papers from the list below. (Probably not every paper will be covered.)
